How does a hot water heater work?
Water comes into our homes via pipes. It comes in cold and quite cold depending on the time of year and where you live. For it to be heated up it needs to be re-directed through a hot water heater. The water flows into the heater and then is heated up and distributed as the hot faucets are turned on in your water system. Hot water heaters usually look like a big cylinder that are tall and often are in basements or maybe laundry rooms. The design is pretty simple with water inside and a heating element to warm the water as it enters. It also keeps it hot so that you have it ready when you need it.
Hot water heaters often last 15-20 years. It all depends on how well you take care of them. Most people don’t maintain their hot water heaters at all. If you do, it can prolong the life of yours. What you can do is flush it annually. This involves attaching a hose to it, draining it out and refilling it with fresh water. This rinses out the sediment inside and keeps your tank from corroding sooner than it should.
There are numerous brands of hot water heaters you can purchase. A few of them are:
- AO Smith
- And others
Which one is the best depends on who you ask. Ruud is the oldest dating back to 1889 when the original Ruud, Edwin, invented one of the earliest versions of a hot water heater. A fantastic invention that we are benefiting from still today.
